Cartographic
and GIS Background
With
a background of studying oil company roadmaps in the
back of the family car while his parents drove across
the country on summer vacation, Frank possesses a
keen interest in cartography and its everyday application.
Perhaps the most vivid example is his work with John
Deere on its DeereTrax GPS/vehicle maintenance system.
The Davenport, Iowa-based machinery company wanted
a way to best convey spatial information to its fleet
managers and large customers. Frank's design team
developed improvements in to the user interface, map
display and an algorithm that converts UTM coordinates
to the name of the closest zip code centroid.
Frank
has been using computer-based cartographic tools for
ten years. He is experienced in the use of most of
Delorme's professional and consumer computer-based
tools including XMap, Map Expert, Topo USA, 3D Topo
Quads, Ertha, Street Atlas, Map and Go. Moreover,
Frank is experienced with GPS technology and its application
with handheld devices.
As
part of his historic preservation work, Frank has
applied his computer expertise in the creation of
custom maps. Using the USGS digital raster graphics
(DRGs), he is able to compose highly detailed maps
in an entirely digital process; no paper is used.
Below, is a sample of one of his maps showing the
various historical alignments of Route 40 in southwestern
New Jersey.
