TORONTO --

Urging MPPs to vote with "conscience and courage" singer Bruce Cockburn was among several entertainment industry luminaries who threw their support behind the NDP government's same-sex legislation as debate on the bill heated up in the legislature.

Cockburn, actress Sonja Smits of television's Street Legal, and Sandy Crawley, president of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), were among about a dozen artists at a Queen's Park news conference to back the bill.

"It's an issue of love and respect for fellow human beings," said Cockburn, adding MPPs should try to overcome public "backlash" and support the bill. "If they have to deal with some kind of backlash, they will have to use their conscience and their courage."

Other notables on a list of supporters distributed by ACTRA include directors Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg ... and members of musical groups Moxy Fruvous and Bare Naked Ladies.
