You're a rock 'n' roll band, hauling huge amplifiers in vans, trucks and buses to theaters around the country. You start, say, in New York City, where the traveling is easy: Nearby New Jersey has good arena crowds, and profitable Philadelphia is just a couple of hours south. Baltimore's an hour beneath that, then Washington. Head northwest for a few hours and you can hit Pittsburgh. In subsequent days, there's Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis........

''Geography plays a lot,'' says Bernie Finkelstein, president of singer- songwriter Bruce Cockburn's record label. ''Because we don't have big commercial hits, it's hard for us to justify going to Florida. To go to Florida, you have to go out of your way.'' But after playing Denver, he says, Cockburn and crew can head easily to Salt Lake City or swing through Texas.
