The renovations, both completed and planned, at opera houses around the state have contributed to the growth of the popular-music concert scene in New Hampshire. Among the communities paving the way are:

Lebanon's 800-seat opera house renovation is moving forward with the first phase of capital renovations. It already has been host to Bruce Cockburn, Alison Krause and Bela Fleck and The Flecktones.

The city and private sector came up with $1 million for the 800-seat Claremont opera house renovations, which have just started. Already such stars as Chet Atkins and the Boston Pops have appeared there. Tom Rush and, tentatively, Judy Collins are scheduled to play there next year.

Littleton has renovated its 500-seat opera house, which has attracted smaller acts like the Dukes of Dixieland and the New Black Eagle Jazz Band.

Newport's opera house -- with a 580-seat capacity -- is being renovated. It too has hosted the Black Eagle Jazz band, along with Ballet New England and Tommy Makem. "We've been bringing people in for years, said Ellen Winkler, chairperson of Newport Opera house Association, "This year we're far more organized about it."
