Brusca Grapes

Did you know that the most widely grown native American grapes is the labrusca grape? It is unclear as to how the grape received its name or if there is any relationship to the Brusca family.

The variety known to botanists as vitas labruscas is a hearty variety resistant to cold weather. These grapes are grown throughout the United States, particularly in New York and New England. Vitas labruscas varieties include Concord, Catawba and Niagra grapes.

If you look hard enough you'll discover LaBrusca wines. It is a very sweet red wine. To my taste, the wine is not very good. It tastes a lot like grape juice.
